Two-step operation gives brass a longer service life because it doesn't stretch the case like a standard expander button. When used to reload cast bullets it prevents "shaving" bullet material during seating. Hardened steel, heat treated to Rc 50 and hand polished before and after to an 8 RMS finish. Most neck expander dies for straight sided pistol rounds simply press a ball into the neck opening, producing a not well centered flared socket to set your bullet into. As you know, it is very easy to set the bullet at an angle - Not optimal.
The Lyman M Die creates a stepped expanded zone that allows easy and certain seating of the bullet (it "snaps" right in), and also creates proper tension for the seated bullet by slightly expanding the case below the seat. The bullet seats with proper alignment, and only slight taper crimping is required to finish off.
The M die makes deformed and shaved bullets, and plating damage a thing of the past.
