Standard M16A2 action spring and the specially-designed buffer, the EMOD A5 system offers the trustworthiness of a fixed-stock rifle, while reducing felt recoil and rate of fire for improved weapon control. A5 Receiver Extension and A5 Spring/Buffer kit are sold separately to enable upgrading an existing carbine to the longer, 7-position extension for use with other mil-spec M4-type buttstocks. This kit features a standard M16A2 action spring and a specially-designed buffer, offering the reliability of a fixed-stock rifle while minimizing felt recoil and enhancing rate of fire for superior weapon control.
Important Note: Attempting to use these parts in a standard M4 receiver extension will result in damage to the rifle. This kit is not compatible with AR-Style .308 platforms.

The A5 system is the NEW standard 07/09/2012
I judge all other recoil system against the A5. It is smoother AND more reliable than even the rifle system. Yet, it's only .75" longer than a carbine receiver extension. PLenty of info available on M4carbine dot net. It was developed for the UCMC by Vltor so they could fit collapsible stocks onto M16A4's. It has the smoothest recoil impulse of any recoil system. It also have two heavier buffers (A5H3 [6oz] and A5H4 [6.83oz]) that are perfect for custom guns, 6.8/6.5, Piston AR's, etc.
All A5 buffer systems use a standard M16 Rifle Spring. Any brand will work, though I prefer the Brownells M16 CS action spring (p/n: 078-101-113WB), a Colt Rifle spring, or a Springco Green Rifle/A5 XP spring.
This recquires an A5 receiver extension ('buffer tube') or an AR10 RE. I recommend the A5 version.
The Magpul STR is the first stock made for the A5...it allows you to get as close to the gun as possible if you shoot square to the target with body armor (I do).
Simply an outstanding innovation by Vltor. It's the new standard. Period.
