This Buttstock Assembly is modeled directly off of original stocks, which are becoming increasingly difficult to find, or in decent condition. Combine the M16A1 Buttstock Assembly with the matching Handguard Set & Pistol Grip from Brownells, and you have a new condition furniture set for your AR-15, M16, M16A1 or other early model rifle. The new production buttstock is in the same styling as a "Type D" stock, with a rear sling swivel and no trap door compartment. This model fits the widest variety of early M16 & AR-15 models. Includes A1 length buttstock screw and instructions. Assembly does not include buffer tube or other hardware. Definitely recommended

Looks good 17/08/2018

I have had this black retro stock a few months and so far no problem on my A1 build. Externally this retro stock is close to an original, and yes internally it is different. I do have an original that I can compare with and this is a good replica externally. Once installed it is solid and no rattle. I use a square shank thick slotted screwdriver, and with the rifle in the vise, and with a wrench, I give the screwdriver an extra twist to tighten the stock screw.. Don't over tighten. Color and finish is a very close match to the original A1 rifle grip, and triangle hand guards. This rifle gets a lot of compliments at the range,

I was leary because of the 3 star reviews. Quite frankly the poor reviews should not dissuade the buyer who desires a A1 length stock.

Bottom line:

Cost, length and configuration make this an excellent stock.

I am not a retro builder so I did not buy it for that purpose.

The A1 is a shorter stock than the A2, that is why I bought it. If you want a longer stock buy an A2.

The butt stock appearance is no different in quality than the Rock River arms or Colt stocks I have. That being said it is all black and not the gray color of the A2. Fit and finish are good to excellent.

The buffer screw comes with loctite applied which will make installation and turning of the screw difficult. Use the correct screwdriver and you will have no issues. Yes the stock will rattle prior to being tightened down. Once installed no rattle, no loose issues, fitment is on par with any other stock from a manufacture. I am replacing a PRS style stock with this because it is lighter and less expensive.

In short, if you're buying this for a retro build, I'd go ahead and get it. If you're getting this as a fixed stock just for shooting, I'd get an A2.

This stock is kind of flimsy. It rattles when your first take it out of the packaging, and you have to screw it in to the buffer tube hard to get it to stop. While it's quiet after that, there's some play between the buttplate and the stock body that causes the buttplate to shift around when you shoulder it, sort of like a loose M4 stock. You get the rattle of the carbine stock without the adjustability, so if you're not going with a retro build, I'd rather have something else.

On the upside, this furniture was built to be an affordable replica for retro builds, and on that count it succeeds. You're not going to find a surplus A1 stock this nice for the price, and it definitely passes the ten-paces looks test. Between your average milsurp A1 stock and this Brownells stock, I'd rather have the Brownells one on my retro gun easily.

It's not perfect, but it does what it's supposed to do.
