The hard surface allows the texturing to be cut a little sharper to give more “bite” than traditional checkered wood grips. Simonich Gunner Grips – Entire surface is covered with the popular “golfball” texturing originally introduced by Simonich Knives for a great hold without digging into your hand. Definitely recommended

My Preferred Grips 06/12/2014

These are the best performance 1911 grips I've used. The grip is very aggressive, but they won't snag on clothing so they also work for CCW. The left panel overlaps the plunger tube properly, so even if the plunger tube works loose, the grip panel will hold it in place. G10 is virtually indestructible, but there is a downside: the panels don't compress at all when you tighten the grip screws, so you should use blue Loctite on the grip screw threads or they can work loose. The black grips look grey from the factory, but if you spray them with WD40, they turn black and stay that way. They aren't relieved for an ambidextrous safety, though, if that's what you need.
