I purchased this along with the Vang Comp model and I liked this unit much better. It protrudes enough to easily reach, locate, and disengage the safety, but does not get in the way. Well made (although a little sharp on the edges) and durable steel construction. Lightly buff the serrations with some 600 grit sandpaper prior to installation, remove the trigger group, remove the safety detent retaining pin, push out the old unit, drop in the new one, and reinstall the detent. Easy, straightforward, installation.
Great improvement over stock safety(15/01/2010)
The only complaint I have about this is the serrations need buffed down. I used a abrasive tipped rotary tool attachment and then re-blued the area with Oxpho Blue. The serrations were rough on my fingers otherwise. Scattergun technologies could put these in a tub with abrasive material similar to what you do with brass and these would be a 5 star product.
NICE(05/02/2010)
Nice safety. Installation is a snap (perfect instructions). Even though the serrations on the jumbo head are sharp, I opted to leave them alone. I think that in a tactical environment, texture on a safety is good.
Buy one!(07/02/2010)
Outstanding modification. Straight-forward installation since the instructions are perfect. Althought the serrations are sharp, I left them that way since it's beneficial in a tactical shotgun.
Vang Comps is better(09/08/2010)
Save your money and buy the Vang Comp Safety. It is a better quality and design.
Great product but lousy directions(31/12/2010)
I read the reviews prior to ordering this product and was pleased to hear that some buyers thought the directions were easy to follow. I purchased one of these buttons am glad to say that it works great (after you figure out the directions). The directions say "after removing the control mechanism" instead of saying "remove the trigger assembly by driving out the two pins and pulling down on the assembly. Pretty easy to figure out unless you are a novice at minor gun smithing. Then, the instructions say to place the control mechanism (meaning the trigger assembly) in a vise and while holding your finger over the detent channel, push out the retaining pin and then remove the control mechanism from the vise and carefully let the detent spring and ball drop from the safety detent channel. What they do not tell you is the "detent channel" is a vertical hole which runs perpendicular (at a right angle to and intersecting the detent spring and ball pin channel. The following problems occur (1) The so called detent ball on my 870 magnum is not a ball but a one eighth inch long pin with a rounded end which rides in the safety button groove, with a smaller pin on the opposite end which fits into the detent spring. (2) Since the spring and "ball" will fall out either the top or bottom of the vertical hole, they are easy to drop and very difficult to find (especially if you are looking for a round ball instead of the pin I described.) To make a long story a little longer, I would highly recommend this item as an added safety benefit. Since this button is the only thing between you and an unexpected and possibly deadly discharge, buy one of these but take the directions with a large grain of salt.
Sweet!(20/01/2011)
I hated everything about the factory safety but I love this safety! It sticks out far enough where I can actually use the middle of my trigger finger to flip it off. It is big enough to easily find it with bulky gloves on. The texture is aggressive enough so you will not slip off of it. Definitely gives you that extra edge to be quicker. This is how they should come from the factory! Worth every penny
Worth the money(20/03/2011)
Easy to install, great fit!
Not worth it(06/06/2011)
I think this safety is of poor quality. There is no Red line to show you (or the Range Officer behind you) that it's on safe. It just doesn't feel right. I am used to having an 870 safety feel "smooth" on the right if the gun is off safe. With this safety installed it constantly feels like it's on safe and I keep trying to push it in. Not suitable for 3-gun competitions. Finally, what's the point? It is BARELY larger than the original safety. Keep your [$] for some ammo.
A must upgrade! Will fit 870 20 Gauge!!!(30/09/2012)
I've upgraded every Remington 870 I've ever owned to Scattergun Technology's safety. I can 100% guarantee that this part will outlive your Remington. I find that its best application is in Hunting firearms, but also makes a great addition to tactical, self-defense, and home security shotguns.
This part will fit 20 gauge Remington 870s. I installed one earlier this morning to my son's dove gun.
After years of upgrading my 12 gauges, I always wanted one for the 20 gauge. To my surprise it fits and functions flawlessly!
Wise investment.
Bighead Safety(04/11/2012)
I have installed this product on every remington I own. It works great on 870's , 1100's, 1187's, even my Grandad's old 742 Woodsmaster.Easy to install, works perfectly and the finsh and fit of the product are perfect.
Works perfectly.(23/01/2013)
Makes the safety easier to turn off especially with gloves on. Easy to install. I do wish it had the red band visual indicator for when the safety is off.
Okay, but..(23/01/2013)
It's okay but, similar items I purchased earlied from Brownells had a large checked head and a red indicator ring that shows when safety is "off". While the button head is large on this item, a checkerd head is easier to locate and operate by touch with gloves on...especially good for hunters in cold and wet weather. Could be better.
Easy upgrade(20/05/2014)
A true drop-in part. Easy upgrade to the small, hard to manipulate factory safety. Like others have said, the only downside is that you have to add red to the "fire" side, which takes all of a few seconds.
Safety strip addede(12/04/2017)
The new one I just received comes with the red safety strip added to the fire side. It is now perfect.
Great Addition To My New Three Gun Build(26/05/2017)
Just installed my new scattergun safety on my new three gun 870 build. Easy to install, works great, will probably buy another for my other 870. Came with the "red" painted off safe indicator. For all the cry babies who couldn't figure out how to paint the red indicator, with a little red modeling paint and a toothpick, you probably shouldn't be installing something as important as a shotgun saftey.
