posible saftey issues 29/12/2014

I installed this sear & spring in a new 77/22 wrm. It required filing the safety pad on the trigger to be able to engage the safety. Testing the trigger it broke at 2- to 2 1/4 lbs, and was crisp. The problem I encountered when closing the bolt the sear would not hold the firing pin from going forward and it would uncock the gun. If I closed the bolt very slowly, not in a normal manner it would stay cocked. This looked like a very dangerous condition. The instructions said if this happens, there is not enough tension on the sear. I took out the Timney spring and put the old factory back in . That solved the problem, but raised the trigger to 3 1/2 lbs. The photo shown would make you believe the sear is adjustable, it is not. The next time I would just buy a whole trigger assembly. I will try a Wolf aftermarket sear spring, to improve trigger pull. If this would have worked properly I would have given it 5 stars.

Slightly recommend

Be careful fitting it 04/06/2011

To fit this you must file the safety pad on the factory trigger. If you go too far, you can not buy a replacement trigger from Ruger, you must either send the rifle back to the factory or put in an aftermarket trigger. I put this sear in a M77/17, but it had a lot of creep. I then tried it in a M77/22, and it gave a nice 2.5 lb pull. I eventually put a Rifle Basix trigger in the M77/17 and it was MUCH easier to install and gave a better pull. I would not buy the Timney sear again and would not recommend it.

Timney 77/22 sear only one worth using 22/05/2011

I am going to sound like a Timney fan again, but after doing trigger work on more than twelve 77/17, 77/22 and 77/22Mag rifles, I will say that the "drop in" sears from other manufacturers ALL were worthless and needed to be stoned to reduce sear engagement and to achieve a good crisp pull. I was so annoyed with these that I was using the OEM parts and stoning the nose of the sear to reduce engagement and winding up with really fine crisp single stage trigger. Then I took a chance and tried the Timney sear which I could see had a set screw to adjust sear engagement. From the factory the trigger still had a bit of creep, so I soaked the sear in WD-40 for two days to break the LocTite 271 (red) bond on the setscrew and then was able to reduce engagement a bit more and the results are just great. You DO still have to stone the safety cam to allow the cam and safety to engage properly so once you install the sear you have a modified gun which is no longer stock and can not be put back in original condition, but that is little problem. You STILL have to drill and tap the front of the trigger hanger for an overtravel screw and I use a 1/8" carbide tip drill bit to cut the rock hard receivers (the stainless as well as the carbon steel receivers are ALL very hard) and then tap 6-32 NF which results in enough thread depth to hold and then use LocTite 271 (red) to hold the setscrew permanently in place. Works just fine but BE CAREFUL in the tapping, back the tap out after cutting every new 90' turn, and use tap lubrication fluid otherwise you will break tap off in the metal trigger hanger. Frankly having to do this on a $600.00 rifle when the Remington 504 for the same money has a match fully adjustable target trigger as OEM equipment is inexcusable on the part of Ruger but the 77/22 guns are really nicely finished and many of us wish to have these in our collections. Now it is possible with a minimum amount of labor and expenditure, to end up with a target trigger pull that is diamond sharp and pulls perhaps 2.5 pounds weight. As we all know, the crispness of the release is more important than the actual weight and a heavy crisp trigger feels lower in weight than a lighter trigger that is jerky and bumpy during release. Again, buy the Timney sear!
