Introducing the Brownell’s Retro A1 rifle length barrel assembly. Chambered in 5.56x45, the chrome lined barrel has a 1-7 twist and finished in black phosphate with an overall length of 20”. Muzzle threads are ½-28 and features a standard rifle barrel extension. The assembly includes a front sight base, .625 No F Marks, sight post, detent, spring, sling swivel, rivet, flat delta ring, barrel nut, weld spring, snap ring, and triangular handguard cap. M16A1 Barrel 1-7 twist (03/08/2017)

I was waiting for this one for a while. The M16A1 profile barrel for my retro build but in a 1-7 twist. Yes the original was a 1-12 twist barrel but the 1-7 gives you the flexibility to shoot a wider range of ammunition accurately. If your a die hard retro guy who wants his rifle to be exactly like the original then wait months for the 1-12 twist barrel. If you want a better shooter/self defense or SHTF rifle then i recommend this barrel over the 1-12. This looks exactly like the 1-12 but with the added benefits of the 1-7. As of writing this review their is still no photo posted because its a new product but I advise you to buy with confidence. Good luck on your build.

Nice barrel (19/12/2017)

Well it's not original but better in my opinion. I did not care about 100% authentic so I went with this 1/7 twist version to get better accuracy and the cost savings over a NOS surplus barrel which seem to be running upwards of 400-500 bucks. Looks great, is a touch on the blacker shade of grey but not too noticeable. No range time yet as we are kicking off winter here but the barrel checks out good so far. Rifling and chamber are clean. The only con I have is the A2 sight post it comes with, swapped for an original A1 I had, Brownells also sells them new. So this barrel wraps up my A1 build on J-15 lower with a Philippine made Capco/Martin Marietta upper and surplus furniture. All in all the project turned out great. The A1 rifle is just sexy. I would have loaded a pic but site keeps erroring out.. sorry.

A few blemishes, and incorrect parts (02/08/2018)

I like this barrel, it's chrome lined, it's a retro profile, and it's an updated 1/7 twist. Sturdy in construction and appearing fairly well made. But, mine has a few issues, and I want other buyers to know about them.

The first two are cosmetic, but concerning. The second two are personal preferences that dont matter too much.

1) The sling swivel rivet is in the wrong place.

It's not dead center on the Front Sight Base. I'm sure it will work fine for years, but it shows a lack of attention to detail.

2) There are copper deposits on the feed ramps.

(Picture 2, left lower feed ramp)

I don't know if this was a used return barrel, but there are clear indications a round was chambered with this barrel. Again, it's not enough to return it, but other buyers should know.

3) The front sight post is wrong.

Brownells uses a square 4 position post, instead of a retro round 5 position post. Ultimately this isn't the worst thing in the world, but it's a barrel for the retro line. I think some retro parts are called for.

4)The front sight base is wrong.

This is the least realistic of my concerns. The early E1 rifles (which weren't in a 1/7 twist anyway) had a very thin looking cast front sight base. This probably isn't something to realistically hope for, but it would have been a nice touch.
